Fitness for everybody…transform yourself The Fitness, Aquatics & Sports Departments at the “J” have a long history of providing healthy, recreational and functional activities to people of all ages and abilities. All members of the community can take advantage of what the “J” has to offer, whether as a member or non-member.

Our Fitness Center provides top notch activities and training to both members and non members in a non-intimidating environment. Physical Education Director, John Cappello, and key staff MaryEllen Deihl and Jan DeAngelo provide a well-rounded and diverse selection of personal training, group exercise classes and top-notch services for clients who range in age from early teen to octogenarians

John is available for individual and/or group training sessions where functional activities are stressed. John is a Level I CrossFit Instructor, a Level I CrossFit Kettlebell Instructor and a certified personal trainer through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).

Jan teaches Kettlebell Pump classes which combine weight training, as well as Beginning Ballet. Kettlebell workouts combine weight training with aerobic exercise and can improve coordination and agility, as well as develop muscle strength and stamina. Kettlebells are similar to bowling balls, but with a handle on the top. They come in all sizes. Participants use the bells to curl and press as they move to music. Jan can also assist you as a Performance Enhancement Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and as a personal trainer.

In addition to our personal training programs we have one of the best spinning programs in Broome County, featuring Suzanne, Kevin and Wayde, who have many years of experience. If spinning is not your bag then you can try your hand at any of our other classes like Pilates, Yoga, Aerobics, Turbo KickBoxing and our new addition Total Body Conditioning, which features a fast paced class covering a variety of modalities, like weight lifting, kettlebells, kickboxing and anything else Val can pull from her bag of tricks!

Aquatics
From our Water Babies classes to Level 6 Swim Instruction, we offer age appropriate classes to meet the needs of our community. The JCC pool is without a doubt one of the finest indoor facilities in Broome County, with swim schedules that are flexible. Starting at 6 am Monday through Friday, our pool has swim times that allow individuals to get in a quick swim before work and offers open gym times at various times during each day. Our Sunday schedule provides an open swim for members and often families with young children take advantage of this time. A community swim for non-members is offered at a nominal fee.
Birthday parties in our pool have become popular this past year and can be booked through our main office by calling 724-2417.

Aquatics Classes
With the addition of a second instructor, we are proud of our semi-private and private swim lessons for adults and children. Experienced instructors work with individuals and groups of all abilities. If aerobics is something you like, we have several water aerobics classes to choose from, one in the morning and one in the evening. Other classes include American Red Cross Lifeguard Courses, competitive swimming, Adult Learn to Swin and Water Skills for young children.

Physical Education
for UPK and Early Childhood Center
The “J” is the proud home for 90+ students for the Vestal School District Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program. As part of their regularly scheduled activities, physical education is provided one day each week by “Mr. John”, our Physical Education Director and also a certified Physical Education teacher.

Class units cover a variety of activities from basic movements like walking, running, jumping skipping and hopping. We explore shapes, colors, sizes, distances and patterns as part of our daily routines. Tag games and relays add to the fun and excitement in class as our friends do their best to run an obstacle course or compete in a bean bag relay. Elements of gymnastics are explored through balance and spatial relations and team sports are introduced in a non-competitive atmosphere, where effort and cooperation are the dominant themes.
We would not be complete without adding social skills to our gym time where sharing, taking turns, kindness, helpfulness and cooperation are not only taught be practiced daily. In addition to our physical education program we provide swim time for every student in our UPK program. Each class is scheduled for 30 minutes of pool time, where the children are encouraged to join the staff in the water to enjoy this unique opportunity that other programs in the area do not offer. Although we do not teach swimming during the school day, group lessons are available in the evening through the JCC.
